On March 11, 1971 a spring training game was played between the home team Oakland A's and the visiting California Angels in Mesa Arizona. The game will go down in baseball history as the only game played with an experimental three ball-three strike rule. Oakland A's owner Charlie Finley tried to get owners to adopt this new rule and it was only tried once. There were 17 walks issued between the two teams and it was never tried again.
I ran across this game program at an antique store a few years ago. It was mixed up with a bunch of other magazines and it caught my eye. I had heard about the experimental rule before and felt that this program was pretty rare. Whoever bought this and used it during the game to keep score did so in great detail and made a notation that it was the 3 ball-3 strike rule game. Listed the umpires and the total game time. Pretty cool piece of baseball history
