1896 Gold Dust Washing Powder Advertising Pinback

20 0 0

7/8" celluloid depicting two black boys in a washtub. Soaps were one of the first pinback button topics in the late 1800's (along with tobacco products.) Early soap and lye advertisements of all types often depicted African-Americans (referred to at that time as "negroes.") I guess whites didn't want to consider themselves unclean?!?!?!?!? Or maybe it's because the blacks were actually out working up a sweat and needed a bath, while the whites were just doing nothing of any importance - entertaining friends and fanning themselves all day. But I digress...
