Michael Jordan is arguably the greatest player in NBA history and now the jersey worn for his last regular season games as a member of the Chicago Bulls has achieved its own greatness; it recently sold for an incredible $173,240 at Goldin Auctions.

“I was happy to see that collectors not just here in the United States but also worldwide saw the significance of this item. It shows that he is the Babe Ruth of basketball memorabilia.” Ken Goldin owner of Goldin Auctions tells Boxes. “Michael Jordan is the king of all modern collectors. There is no comparison.”

The winning bid is the highest price anyone has paid for a Jordan collectible at an auction surpassing the Jordan’s “flu game” shoes which sold last year at Goldin Auctions for $105,000. “After seeing his shoes sell last year for just over $100,000, I went in with a goal of getting $150,000 for his jersey and in the final hours of the auction the bidding went past our goal and just kept going.” said Golden who added that while bidding ended at 10pm the auction actually ended at 5am. “Our policy is that all bids must be placed by our 10pm deadline and then everything is reviewed until we’ve gone through it all. It was a great ending to a long night. continued Ken. “People asked me if I drank a lot of coffee but I tell them no, it’s all adrenaline. I love this stuff.”

Prior to Goldin Auctions putting the jersey up for sale, jersey authenticator MeiGray Group authenticated MJ’s Bulls jersey as matching the jersey he wore on April 18, 1998 when he finished his regular season career against the New York Knicks. It was indeed the last time Jordan wore a Bulls jersey in a regular season game on the United Center floor. The jersey also came with a letter of authenticity from the Chicago Bulls. It all lead up to one of the biggest days in the history of Goldin Auctions. “Michael Jordan has millions of collectors; way more than anyone else.” said Goldin. “To say that we had the best and most valuable Jordan collectible ever offered, it really makes us a magnet for all Jordan collectors worldwide.”

The amount that Goldin Auctions got for Jordan’s jersey also makes a pretty bold statement to Goldin about where sports collectibles stand right now on the auction scale. “In basketball the only other professional jersey that sold for over $100,000 was Julius Erving’s rookie jersey with the Virginia Squires.” continued Ken. “To have a modern collectible go for that much establishes a benchmark. It shows that the younger generation is in charge of the sports collectible industry right now and it’s their heroes like Michael Jordan and even guys like Derek Jeter and Mike Trout whose collectibles will be on the rise.”
